It’s normal to see some strands of hair come out when you brush or comb your hair. But maybe you’ve been noticing that your ponytail doesn’t feel so thick. Or the part in your hair is showing a lot more scalp than before. Or you recently found a thinning patch near your hairline.
But when do we need to start becoming concerned? The answer is now. Getting ahead of hair loss is crucial to women in their 40s or 50s because this is when your body changes affect your hair health the most due to hormone levels.
Learn more about this by reading our blogs about hormones.
Did You Know? Studies show that more than 50% of women will experience noticeable hair loss. The most significant cause of hair loss in women is female-pattern hair loss (FPHL). This affects about 30 million people in the United States. Source
Here are some simple questions to ask yourself about your current hair loss. The answers should help you pinpoint the culprits.
When did you first notice that you were losing your hair?
What did you notice at that time? Was your hair “coming out” in larger amounts? Did you see more shedding than usual? Did your part look wider?
Have you recently noticed that your hair loss was worsening? What makes you think it is worsening?
What is your family’s history when it comes to hair loss? Your mom’s side? Your father’s side?
Have you been pregnant at any time before or during the hair loss?
Have you had a serious illness at any time before or during the hair loss?
Have you been hospitalized at any time before or during the hair loss?
Have you been under a severe amount of stress at any time before or during the hair loss?
Have your hormones been checked to evaluate your hair loss?
Have you started any special diets at any time before or during the hair loss? Are you vegetarian?
Did you recently start new medications? Supplements?
Have you ever been diagnosed with thyroid issues? Have you been on thyroid medication?
Have you ever tested for low iron?
Have you recently started using a new hairstyling tool, such as a flat iron?
Have you changed the hair dye you use?
If, after answering these questions, you see a potential reason for your hair loss, it’s time to act now! Of course, if it is something simple like not using your flat iron anymore or changing your shampoo, do so immediately. But if your answer to the questions above pointed more to a health issue, go to your doctor. They will take a complete history and run blood tests to see if they can find the reason why your hair loss has escalated. They can prescribe medications and suggest supplements like iron or biotin.
Again, the most important thing you can do is not wait. Waiting can shrink your options and cause irreversible hair loss.
